When buying summer clothes must look for the fabric you choose. Heavy, thick and polyester fabric are going to make your life miserable as you will feel exhausted from the heat. Also avoid wearing dark colours in summer because they absorb heat. Choose soft breathable materials and light colours to feel fresh and cool. The best fabrics for summer are lightweight, breathable, and able to wick moisture away from your skin. Here are my five top choices:
1. Linen (Best Overall)
When I am buying clothes for myself for summers the first fabric I look for is Linen. Honestly the most breathable fabric you will get. Lightweight and will let air pass through you. Buy some basic colours Linen shirts and trousers and you are good to go. Mix and match with each other to make new outfit for yourself everyday.

Why it’ great :
- Extremely breathable
- Keeps you cool in hot weather
- Absorbs moisture and dries quickly
- Durable and long-lasting
Best for:
- Dresses
- Shirts
- Pants
- Blazers
- Shorts
One downside: Linen wrinkles easily, but many people like its relaxed look.
2. Cotton
Cotton is the second best choice for summer fabrics. It is also super breathable and less pricey. It is very comfortable to wear as well. Cotton is easily washable and is less wrinkly as compared to linen. Get yourself some basic cotton sets and you can wear them all summer long. Make sure to wear light colours during the day or especially when you are going out in the heat to keep your body cool and relaxed.

Why it’s great:
- Soft and comfortable
- Breathable
- Affordable
- Easy to care for
Best for:
- T-shirts
- Dresses
- Blouses
- Shorts
- Everyday wear
Look for 100% cotton or a high cotton percentage for the best comfort.
3. Cotton Lawn
Cotton Lawn is the best choice for people who wear traditional clothes. You can get beautiful dresses in cotton lawn fabric. This is the most worn fabric during summers in Pakistan and India. It is so lightweight and airy. People usually wear same print co-ord sets of cotton lawn in summers.

Why it’s great:
- Lightweight and airy
- Soft with a smooth finish
- Excellent for very hot weather
Best for:
- Summer dresses
- Tunics
- Blouses
- Traditional outfits
Cotton lawn is especially popular for summer clothing because it’s cool, comfortable, and breathable.
4. Rayon (Viscose)
Rayon is a soft, lightweight fabric made from regenerated cellulose, usually derived from plant-based materials such as wood pulp. It is popular because it can feel smooth and cool while being relatively affordable.
Rayon is lightweight and does not feel heavy on the body. It is comfortable to wear and feels cool against the skin. The best part of Rayon fabric is that it drapes beautifully and is best for making dresses and skirts.

Why it’s great:
- Lightweight
- Soft and flowy
- Feels cool against the skin
Best for:
- Maxi dresses
- Skirts
- Blouses
Downsides of rayon
Rayon does have some disadvantages:
- It can shrink if washed incorrectly.
- Some types can wrinkle easily.
- Wet rayon can be weaker than when dry.
- Some rayon garments require gentle washing or dry cleaning.
- Lower-quality rayon can pill or lose its shape more quickly.
Rayon drapes beautifully, though it can wrinkle and may require more careful washing.
5. Chambray
Chambray is a lightweight, woven fabric that looks similar to denim but is generally much lighter and softer. It is traditionally made from cotton, with coloured yarns (often blue) woven with white yarns, giving it its characteristic slightly faded or textured appearance.
Chambray is less heavy than traditional denim. It is very breathable as cotton chambray allows air to circulate. It gets more comfortable as you keep wearing it. It is super versatile, you can wear it casually and also dress it up a bit.

Why it’s great:
- Looks like denim but is much lighter
- Breathable
- Comfortable in warm weather
Best for:
- Shirts
- Dresses
- Jumpsuits
Is Chambray a Good-Quality Fabric?
Yes, especially when it’s made from good-quality cotton. When shopping, check the fabric label and look for 100% cotton chambray or a high-quality cotton blend.
One thing to remember: chambray is not denim. It gives you the look of denim while being lighter and more comfortable for warm weather.
Chambray gives you the classic denim look without the heavy weight.
What Fabrics to Avoid in Summer?
- Heavy polyester (can trap heat)
- Thick denim
- Velvet
- Fleece
- Acrylic
These fabrics tend to retain heat and can feel uncomfortable in hot, humid weather.
Which Fabric Is Best For Summers?
- Linen
- Cotton
- Cotton Lawn
- Rayon (Viscose)
